Rules for Residential Burning

You must apply in person at Covington Fire Department Station 21, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

The permit is free of charge and valid only for the day it is issued

You can only burn natural vegetation (leaves, branches, or yard debris).

You cannot burn man-made materials (plastics, treated lumber, or painted wood).

You can only burn from 10:00 AM to sunset and the fire has to be fully extinguished by dark.

Burning in the State of Georgia is only allowed from October 1st to April 30th each year.

Burn piles may not exceed a 4 foot diameter with a max of 2 feet in height.

Fire location shall be a minimum of 50 feet from any structure and 25 feet from woodlands.

Have a water source nearby and ready.

Permits can be revoked at any time if weather conditions (wind, humidity) become unsafe

The Fire Department may inspect your site before issuing the permit.

Non-compliance may result in fines or suppression charges under Georgia law.

Burn Permits

In accordance with City of Covington regulations, the Covington Fire Department requires all residents who wish to burn yard debris (natural vegetation) to first obtain a burn permit. To receive a permit, residents must complete and submit a Burn Permit Request.

Please remember: Do not begin burning until you have received an approved permit from the Covington Fire Department.

Burn permits are valid only for the date issued, and all fires must be fully extinguished by dark. Permits may be revoked at any time due to unexpected weather changes or safety concerns.
