Smoke Alarms
Fire alarm systems are critical for early fire detection and life safety, and the City of Covington enforces strict compliance with the Georgia State Fire Code and NFPA 72. All commercial occupancies and certain residential properties are required to have properly installed and maintained fire alarm systems. Any new installations or system modifications must be submitted for review and approved by the Covington Fire Marshal’s Office prior to installation. To begin the plan review process contact the Fire Marshal’s Office at 770-385-2100.
For additional fire safety, residents are encouraged to develop and practice a home fire escape plan, teach children what smoke alarms sound like and how to respond, and never disable a smoke alarm due to cooking or steam—use fans or open a window instead.
The City enforces a false alarm policy, which may include fines for repeated nuisance alarms. For questions about fire alarm compliance, plan reviews, or inspections, contact the Fire Marshal’s Office.
